Knight was born in Minneapolis, Minnesota on 26 March 1973. He became involved with the Guthrie Theater and attended high school at the Academy of Holy Angels in Richfield. He enrolled at the University of Minnesota but dropped out and got leading roles at the Guthrie Theater. Knight moved to New York City and appeared on Broadway and gained his first appearance as a regular on Charlie Lawrence, with Laurie Metcalf.
