Occupational therapy (often called OT) is the use of treatments to develop, recover, or maintain the daily living skills of people with a physical, mental, or developmental condition.
Practitioners of occupational therapy are called occupational therapists. Their role is to work with a client to help them achieve a fulfilled and satisfied state in life through the use of "purposeful activity or interventions designed to achieve functional outcomes which promote health, prevent injury or disability and which develop, improve, sustain or restore the highest possible level of independence." Occupational therapists can work with people of any age.
Notable Occupational TherapistsEdit
- Miranda Bailey (Man on the Moon): When Dr. Miranda Bailey showed symptoms of OCD during a surgery, Dr. Ben Warren reported her to Chief Hunt and board director Dr. Derek Shepherd. This lead to a psychiatric evaluation and the prescription of medication to mitigate and manage the condition. Dr. Alma was assigned to shadow Dr. Bailey as her occupational therapist to evaluate Dr. Bailey's mental fitness to return to surgery. After failing to curb her OCD with Dr. Alma's occupational therapeutic techniques and with the support of Dr. Richard Webber, Dr. Bailey finally admitted to her disease and complied with her medication.
