Nina is a young woman born without a uterus who received a transplant from her grandmother in an attempt to become pregnant.

Nina came to see Addison for a consult. She'd been seeing Jake for fertility and he sent her to Addison. She'd been born without a uterus, but had functional ovaries. She wanted Addison to give her her grandmother, Dorothy's, uterus.
After speaking to Nina, Addison agreed to do the surgery. However, there was bleeding and in order to save Nina's life, they had to cut off blood supply to the graft.
Jake had to break the news to her that the transplant didn't take and told her there were other ways for her to become a mother.

Nina's mother had died the previous year, which prompted her to pursue motherhood. When she was a child, Nina's mother would clean her room and buy her flowers when she got sick, something her own mother had done for her.
