Derek arrives at Seattle Grace hospital as the new head of neurosurgery, earning a salary of $2 million a year. He is a Bowdoin College graduate and went to Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons for Medical School. Shortly after arriving, he meets Meredith Grey and has a drunken one-night stand with her, only to discover that she is a new surgical intern at the hospital where he has recently begun working. Although she initially rejects his advances, Meredith eventually agrees to date Derek. His personality and good looks earn him the nickname “McDreamy” among Meredith and her friends. Their relationship comes to a sudden halt, however, when Derek’s estranged wife Addison Montgomery arrives in Seattle unannounced, making it clear that she wants to give their marriage another try.

Derek wakes up on the floor with his one night stand, standing over him. They make pleasant small talk, she goes for a shower and he leaves. At Seattle Grace Hospital, he looks up from a conversation and sees Meredith (the one night stand) in front of him requesting help with a patient. Derek is pleased with this revelation and asks her out but she refuses. He later gives Meredith the cold shoulder when she does not answer her page immediately when Katie Bryce starts seizing. However, when he asks all the interns for help in discovering what is wrong with Katie and Meredith and Cristina find out, he lets her in on the surgery. When Meredith tries to back out because she thinks its because they slept together Derek insists it was because she was Katie's dotor. After the succesfull surgery, they share a moment and he leaves.-A Hard Day's Night

As Meredith joins him in an elevator, Derek tells her about his love for ferry boats, he flirts with her but she tells him he can't. Suddenly she drops her files and they kiss passionately until the elevator stops and Meredith exits like nothing happened. Derek scrubs in on a surgery on a rape victim and afterwards in the scrub room he tells Burke that he came to Seattle because Richard made him an offer he couldn't refuse, position as chief when he retires. After the surgery on Allison, Derek tells Meredith that she may never wake up but he will wait with her, later that day Allison wakes up and he smiles. At the end of the day he waits at an elevator, Meredith almost goes in too but she tells him she'll take the stairs. Smiling he yells after hr that she has no self-control.-The First Cut Is the Deepest

Derek walks down the street and sees Bailey, he goes to cross the road but she pulls him back just as several cyclists race by and crash into each other. At the hospital, he Izzie and Cristina treat an nidentified John Doe but later he walks by Mereedith and sees her kiss a patient. He gets jealous but she tells him she knows that its just the chace and he only wants her for the thrill and because he can't have her. When his patient is identified, he introduces his wife to Izzie and Cristina to discuss harvesting his organs. After the surgery Derek goes into the intern locker room and sees Meredith attack Alex and advises Alex to leave, aware that he provoked her. Later, Derek finds Meredith and explains it isn't the chase, he loves everything about him and one day she will go out with him, smiling at a bemused Meredith, he leaves.-Winning a Battle, Losing the War

Derek quizzes Meredith on her personal life and asks her if he can get her breakfeast. When she says no he decides to listen to her an act profeesional at the hospital. Later Derek has Meredith, Alex and George pages to him as he shows them a patient with seven nails in his head. He asks Alex and George to dig up research and Meredith to ask Jorge's wife, Sona some questions. After they do research, Derek discovers he is on his own, in surgery he manages to remove all the nails but they will know everything the next day. The next day, Derek asks Meredith to breakfeast again and checks on Jorge and discovers a tumor. Derek tells Jorge and Sona they can have five to ten years but Jorge will lose his memories or three to five good years but he will die quickly. They choose the 5-10 years option and when Meredith tells them they're making the wrong decision, he aplogizes for her and accepts Sona's decision. Later, he and Meredith sit down at a cafe to but their meal.-No Man's Land

Derek treat a drug addict, Jerry Frost and tries to explain to Alex that although he is a druggie and wants the medication, his pain is real. He approaches Meredith and asks her to dinner but she refuses and tells him that she is having a party, Derek thanks her for not inviting him and leaves but reminding her about his dinner proposition. Derek goes to discharge Mr. Frost but Frost trips and falls and has to go into surgery, he invites Izzie and Alex to scrub in. After the surgeery he drives to Meredith house and greets her, saying that he is much more fun to wake up to than a bottle of tequilla. They kiss a few times, get into his car and soon they start to have sex. Suddenly Bailey appears at the car and asks them to move their car because she is boxed in. The following day Derek bumps into Bailey on a staircase and is left unsure if she will speak out about what she saw.-Shake Your Groove Thing

Derek pulls up at the hosptal behind Meredith why she is ignoring him but she tells him she is just late. She tells him that it is complicated because she is sleeping with her boss and Bailey is ignoring her she then asks him to walk away. The interns do rounds with Bailey and when Derek asks them a question and everyone but Meredith has no answer, he lets her scrub in on Levangie's surgery. Bailey follows Derek out to the elevator and tells him that if she finds him favouring Meredith then she will ban her from the OR. Later he discusses a patient named Alice with Burke and Bailey, he tells them he can do the surgery agter Levangie. Meredith asks Derek if Mr. Levangie is a good candidate for DBS, he tells her that he is but hes not interested and when Meredith suggests they try to change his mind he takes her off the surgery. When Levangie's daughter and Meredith ask Levangie to consider, he agrees to do the surgery. Derek succesfully performs the surgery but afterwards, Meredith tells him not to give her surgeries when she doesn't deserve them but not to take them away when she does deserve them , he aplogizes and leaves to perform surgery on Alice nut unfortunatley, she dies. Meredith waits until Derek emerges from the hospital and invites him somewhere that there is a great view of ferry boats. He opens the car door for her and they both get in.-If Tomorrow Never Comes

Meredith wakes up in bed with Derek but insists he leave in case Izzie or George see him. He tries to sneak out but Izzie and George see him. After his surgery, Derek leaves to get coffe but is met by George. George asks him to look at a young girl and Derek says he will if Gerge orders the CTs. In Jamie's room Derek tells her she looks like a princess while telling her parents that she needs to get an MRI. After getting the results, Derek explains that she has Rasmussen's encephalitis, without surgery she will die but with surgery she could lead a normal life. When the parents agree to do the surgery, Derek lets George scrub in but soon kicks him out when he questions if one of the other doctors about them drinking. Derek asks Cristina to join him but halfway through the surgery Jamie starts to wake up. Derek asks Taylor to increase the anestesia but finds he is asleep. He wakes him up and orders him out. After the surgery Derek approaches George and apologizes, he extends his arm and after a moment of hesitation George accepts.-The Self-Destruct Button

Derek and Meredith get ready for work at her house and she asks why he always goes to her house and she never goes to his or know anything about him. At the hospital, their conversation continues but Derek insists that he doesn't have anything to learn about so Meredith tells him her pants will stay on until she learns something. In the ER, he examines a patient who fell while rock climbing. He asks a nurse to get Meredith to get an MRI for him. Derek returns to Mr. Walker with the results of the MRI and tells him that he does not know how the paralysis is growing. Later the paralysis grows from his feet to his stomach and his hands so Derek books an OR taking achance that he won't make things worse. After the surgery Derek tells Meredith that he thinks he stopped the paralysis from advancing but his paralysis could be permanent. The conversation moves on to them and Meredith asks him to give her a reason to believe they are in a realtionship. Meredith examines Mr. Walker and is pleased when he moves his finger and tells her his feeling is coming back, as she leaves the room Derek asks her to follow him and they drive in his car to a trailer. Derek tells her that the large fields of land are his, as is the trailer and he tells her lots of things about himself and his life. Afterwards, Meredith smiles and they walk into the trailer holding hands.-Save Me

At Meredith's house, everyone gets ready for work. Derek's phone rings but he ignores it. From the gallery at SGH, Derek looks down at the chief in surgery who starts dropping equipment. After the surgery, Derek confronts him in his office and eventually Webber alows him to secretly run some tests. After the MRI, the two see that Webber has a tumor on his optic nerve and needs surgery. Derek meets up with Bailey and Meredith and asks them to join him in the surgery and when Bailey leaves they discuss the syphillis outbreak, when Derek leaves his phone starts to ring but again, he ignores it. After the surgery Meredith breaks down outside the chief's room and tells Derek about her mother's illness and he comforts her, from his room the chief sees them. When Meredith comes into the chief's room he advises her not to get involved with Derek as it is a mistake but she respectfully ignores him. At the end of the day, Derek greets Meredith in the lobby and they plan their night. A red-haired woman then walks in and heads towards them, Derek quickly apologizes to Meredith while the woman starts to talk to him and Meredith looks on, very confused. She then introduces herself to Meredith, Hi. I'm Addison Shepherd. And you must be the woman who's been screwing my husband.-Who's Zoomin' Who?
