The key to surviving a surgical internship is denial. We deny that we're tired, we deny that we're scared, we deny how badly we want to succeed. And most importantly, we deny that we're in denial. We only see what we want to see and believe what we want to believe, and it works. We lie to ourselves so much that after a while the lies start to seem like the truth. We deny so much that we can't recognize the truth right in front of our faces. Sometimes reality has a way of sneaking up and biting us in the ass. And when the dam bursts, all you can do is swim. The world of pretend is a cage, not a cocoon. We can only lie to ourselves for so long. We are tired, we are scared, denying it doesn't change the truth. Sooner or later we have to put aside our denial and face the world. Head on, guns blazing. De Nile. It's not just a river in Egypt, it's a freakin' ocean. So how do you keep from drowning in it?

Deny, Deny, Deny is the fourth episode of the second season and the 13th overall episode of Grey's Anatomy.

Short Summary[]

Cristina struggles to stay in bed when she could be performing surgeries. Alex discovers that he needs to re-take a test to stay at SGH, Derek must choose between Addison or Meredith and Meredith's mother continues to bother the staff of Seattle Grace.

Full Summary[]

Bailey is sitting at the bar at Joe's. A few seats away Izzie is sitting looking intently at Alex playing darts.

Alex sees Izzie looking at him and he smiles.

Joe gives Izzie a drink and she goes to a table where George and Meredith are sitting. George says when he left Cristina she said that she was okay. Izzie says, "Nobody goes through what she went through and is totally over it by now." George thinks Cristina can. Izzie says that she's too fine, that she is cold. George defends saying, "No, she's hardcore. She's got ice in her veins. She does what she has to do to get through it." Izzie says Cristina lost a baby and a fallopian tube and acts like she is totally fine and has no emotions, that she is missing her soul. George says, "God, she's gonna make a great surgeon...You show no weakness you make it to the top." Meredith adds, "Some people just keep their feelings to themselves."

Meredith sees Derek come into the bar. Derek sits next to Bailey. Bailey closes her eyes then stares off into space as Derek says, "Meredith kissed me. Addison kissed me. My wife and my girlfriend kissed me on the same day." Joe gives him a drink. Bailey asks Joe, "Do I look friendly to you?" Joe replies, "You're a tiny little kitten of joy and love." Bailey glares at him playfully. Joe says, "What? He saved my life." She tells 'McDreamy' to go sit by someone who cares. Derek says, "Everything's going to be fine", trying to convince himself. "Addison'll go back to New York. Meredith and I will start over. Everything's going to be fine. Right?" Bailey says, "You so damn stupid."

Bailey tells Izzie, Meredith, Alex, and George to be extra sharp because Cristina is still unable to work. She also tells Alex to talk to Chief before the end of the day. Meredith and George wonder what he did for Richard to ask for him. George says, "Maybe he gave the chief syphilis."

Bailey and the interns walk into a hospital room where the patient is regaling a group of nurses and doctors with a story on her adventure in the Belizean jungle. Apparently, she has her doctorate but was unable to help a man who was bitten by a jaguarundi. Bailey tells the other nurses and doctors to leave. The patient, Kalpana Vera, named by villagers in Nepal, tells Bailey and the interns her parents are missionaries and she travels with them many places. Izzie is impressed and looks at some of the miscellaneous memorabilia on the table before Bailey gives her a reprimanding look. Izzie presents her to everyone. She is Burke's patient. Kalpana has multiple episodes of syncope and ventricular arrhythmia - she has been passing out and having palpitations. Kalpana explains that when she was 8 years old she was sent from Zambia to the U.S. for treatment. Bailey asks Izzie what the causes of ventricular arrhythmia are. Before Izzie can answer Cristina's voice is heard. She is at the door in a patient gown and with her I.V. She says, "Valvular disease, mitral valve prolapse, stimulants, drugs and metabolic abnormality" all with a big grin on her face. Everyone looks at her in slight amusement. Bailey tells her to leave. Cristina insists that she is fine. Bailey says, "You better be in your room by the time we round on you." Cristina leaves irritated and disappointed. Her pink panties are exposed and Alex says, "Nice panties, Yang." The other interns laugh as Cristina closes the back of her gown and says, "In your dreams, Evil Spawn."

Meredith presents Cristina Yang to Bailey and the rest of the interns. Cristina feels she is ready to get back to work. In the background is Cristina's mother, Helen. Helen asks if she would really be able to go back to work. Cristina is desperately trying to convince them she is okay - that she is taking in solid food and her pain is controlled by the medicine she takes. Helen tells them that the nurse said she had a fever earlier that morning. Bailey asks if it is true. Cristina admits it's true. George brings up the time Cristina worked two shifts with a high temperature and the flu. Cristina thanks George. Bailey tells her to stay in bed until it normalizes. Helen tells them that she reminds Cristina that there's more to life than her career. Cristina says, "Mother, go upholster something." Bailey tells her to just relax and get better, she can be a doctor next week. As they leave Cristina grabs Meredith's arm and says she cannot be left alone with her mother, that she is flying over the cuckoo's next. Meredith tells her she needs time to heal, winks at her and leaves. Cristina exclaims that she IS healed. She sighs, looks at her mother, and slouches in her bed. Under her breath she says, "Oh God."

George presents Ellis to everyone. As he talks Ellis tells him that he is wrong, wrong, wrong. She then says that she does not want Meredith in the room because she is a child and does not want Meredith on her team. Bailey says they'll meet her outside. Meredith leaves the room.

Derek is heading to an elevator when he runs into Meredith. He asks if she is skipping rounds. She says she is avoiding her mother and tries to walk past Derek. Derek gets ahold of her arm and pulls her in front of him. Meredith says, "You've got a wife. Your life is complicated. I don't need complicated. I have complicated all on my own." After every sentence Derek says "Yes". Meredith tells him to stop doing that. Derek says, "Try not to make any sudden movements." He smiles and adds that Addison is leaving because she does not have anymore patients and she has no reason to be in Seattle. He strokes Meredith's cheek just as Addison comes. Addison says, "Well, isn't this cozy. Can I join in or are you not into threesomes?" Meredith says she has to go and walks away. Derek tells Addison that she really is Satan. Addison says she's not Satan. Derek asks why she hasn't used her broomstick and gone back to New York. Addison tells him to stop being petty, Derek tells her to stop being an adulterous bitch. Addison says, "You know you are going to forgive me eventually right? I mean you can't just -- I mean there was a time where you thought of me as your best friend." Derek says, "There was a time where I thought you were the love of my life. Things change." Addison pulls out divorce papers from her bag. She tells him if he signs, she'll sign. Meredith is climbing the stairs in the background and sees this. She tells him when he signs she'll be on the first plane out. Derek says he'll sign them as soon as possible. Addison steps into the elevator then steps out, she says, "Have you ever thought that even if I am Satan and an adulterous bitch that I still might be the love of your life?"

Cristina is in bed filling out her own chart. Burke peeks into the room then comes in. He looks very happy to see her as he takes her chart from her. Burke says, "You're the patient not the doctor. Act like one." He looks through her chart and says he's had a hard time finding a time when she's alone. Burke asks how she is. Cristina tells him to look at her chart. Burke asks again emphasizing how she is doing. They look at each other for a few seconds and then she looks away and says she is perfectly okay. Burke says he had a right to know about the baby. She says now he knows and it's over, there's nothing left to deal with or to say. Burke starts to talk when Helen comes out of the bathroom. Helen and Burke introduce themselves to each other. Helen talks about how she has been remarried since Cristina was three years old. Cristina tells her it's too much information and that Burke is busy. Helen says that Burke is good looking and adds, "Why don't you ever bring home a man as good looking as him?" Cristina tells her to stop talking. Helen says to Burke, "Forgive her. I don't know what I ever did to raise such an unpleasant girl." Burke excuses himself and leaves the room. Cristina is upset that Helen called her unpleasant in front of her boss. Helen says to lighten up.

Alex and Izzie are walking when she brings up how they are both off that night. She has a hard time stringing together words to ask him out. Alex says, "You are so into me. It's sad - the worship, the adoration. I am so handsome. I intoxicate you." Izzie says to forget it. Alex asks, "Izzie, would you like to go out with me tonight? On a date. You wear something gorgeous. I pay for food." Izzie asks if he's making fun of her. Alex smiles and says he's not. She says, "Okay then", with a big grin on her face. Alex says, "Good." She says, "Good", too.

Meredith and Bailey go into a room where a young man is the patient. Bailey says, "I thought I told you I never wanted to see you again." He replies, "That's only cause you're too lazy to learn anything more." Bailey introduces Meredith to the patient, Jeremiah Tate. Jeremiah was one of Bailey's first patients when she was an intern. Jeremiah says that Bailey was clueless on how to treat cystic fibrosis. Jeremiah raises around $100,000 a year for cystic fibrosis running triathlons. After reading his chart Bailey says he's finally admitting to having a little pain. She examines him and presses her hand on his torso. He looks to be in some discomfort. He also says he has been having seizures. He thinks it is his pancreatitis acting up again. Bailey says she'll be back with his results and a plan then asks him where his parents think he is now. He laughs and says New Jersey. Bailey smiles and she and Meredith leave the room.

Meredith asks, "What about his parents?" Bailey says Jeremiah does not like to bother them until he's well or he's going to be discharged. She adds, "He understands his reality he just chooses to ignore it. Denial works for him, Grey."

Alex is going through a bunch of clipboards and reads off what's wrong with that particular patient. He sees one where a man has a gun shot wound (G.S.W.) to the head. He asks, to no one in particular, why the trauma team wasn't called. A nurse shows him where the man is. He has a small scar in the middle of his forehead. He is in the waiting room reading a magazine.

Helen is painting Cristina's toes red while talking about her redecoration plans. Cristina tells her to give her back her toes. Helen says she'll change the subject and asks who the father of Cristina's baby was. Cristina tries to bring back the redecorating subject. Helen says, "Someone you work with, right? Or is it just for sex? You make such a point of not forming attachments." Cristina asks for 20 minutes of peace and quiet. Helen says that the daughter she raised would be more appreciative of her help. Cristina says, "The daughter you raised is begging for you to go. Now." Helen says she did not even have to go to Seattle and that she's very busy. Cristina says, "Yeah. I know. I know. Redecorating your house", then asks if she could bring her a mocha latte. Helen says, "A non fat one." Cristina says, "No, a fat one." Helen takes her purse and leaves the room.

Alex is examining Samuel Linden, the man with a G.S.W. to the head. He notes how Samuel is talking, there's no bullet exit wound. and that it looks like a burn and not a gunshot wound. Samuel says that he shot himself while cleaning his gun. He tells Alex not to think it was suicide and that he just made a mistake and now he is paying for it. He adds that he shot himself. Alex looks at him with a peculiar expression.

Cristina, wearing scrubs, is searching through charts when Nurse Tyler comes up behind her with his arms folded. He asks where her I.V. is. Cristina says she's taking solids so she removed it. He looks for Cristina's chart. He reads off, "Bed rest, out of bed to chair, bathroom privileges. Nothing about stealing charts at the nurse's station." A man pushing an empty wheelchair passes, Cristina takes it from him and sits down and says, "There. Satisfied? I'm out of bed to chair." Nurse Tyler says he's going to tell Meredith about it. Cristina says, "Ooo I'm so scared" and rolls herself away.

Ellis is seated at a chair and table looking through papers. George comes into the room and asks how she is doing. Ellis is glad to see George because she wants a patient's test results. George looks confused. Richard comes into the room and says, "So, today you're her intern. It's better than being her husband." George says, "Well that's a matter of opinion." Richard greets Ellis. She says it's good to see him then tells George to get the labs. George quietly asks Richard to be removed from the case since Ellis is not a surgical patient anymore. Richard tells him that she needs stability and asks George to keep a special eye on her. George says that it's not fair to him. He looks at chief. Chief simply tells him to get moving on the labs.

Kalpana takes a pill right as Cristina shows up at her doorway. Cristina calls her on it. Kalpana just says it's "the pill" to prevent pregnancy. Cristina looks through her chart and says it's not there and Kalpana is supposed to tell them all the meds she takes. Kalpana says that Cristina is not her doctor and she should not be there. Izzie comes into the room and tells Cristina she shouldn't be there. Cristina tries to defend herself and says how Kalpana was taking unauthorized medication. Izzie and Cristina have an argument about Cristina going back to her room. Kalpana collapses to the ground and Cristina presses the Code Blue Button. Izzie pounds Kalpana's chest and she comes to. Nurse Tyler comes into the room and helps Izzie put her back in bed. Izzie tells Cristina to go back to her room. Another nurse starts to wheel her there. Cristina tells Izzie to mark down the meds she is taking.

Bailey and Meredith are looking at Jeremiah's lab results and X-rays. They note how he has a mass on his mid-epigastrium and diffused enlargement of the pancreas. He's going to need an exploratory laparotomy. Bailey is hesitant because of the state of his lungs, despite running triathlons. Meredith asks what they're going to do. Bailey doesn't know. Addison comes into the room and calls Jeremiah a survivor. Bailey says he's been her patient for five years and refuses to lose him now. Addison says she'll be able to help because she's seen a case like this in a nine year old. Bailey is glad to accept the help, while Meredith isn't too happy about it. She says, "You're a neonatal specialist. This isn't your area." Bailey shakes her head trying to get Meredith to stop talking. Addison says she did two years of cystic fibrosis genetic research and has seen it all. Meredith says, "Oh."

Ellis walks into an elevator. Meredith and Derek are coming down the stairs. Derek explains to Meredith that offering to help does not mean Addison is going to stay at SGH. She asks what it means then. Derek says, "It means that she's a good doctor." Meredith asks why Derek is defending her. Derek says he's not defending her and that Addison gave him divorce papers. Meredith looks relieved. Derek says that all he has to do is sign them and he's free. Meredith asks if he has anything to think about. He says there isn't, he just has to read through it then sign.

Alex and the radiology tech talk about Samuel who is about to go into the CT. Alex thinks he's a mental defect. A woman comes in looking for Samuel. Alex tells her she can't be in there. She sees Samuel lying down on the machine, she says that she is his wife of 21 years. She asks how he is. Alex says he's fine for a guy who says he shot himself. The wife gets defensive and says, "He shot himself, he was cleaning his gun. What is wrong with you people?" Alex gets her to leave the room and tells her he'll keep her informed.

Bailey is inside an elevator and Derek gets in. She puts her hands on her hips. Derek starts talking about accepting a consult from Addison when she should be on her way home. He says, "You're trying to drive me crazy, aren't you?" Bailey pulls the stop button. Bailey says, "You think this has something to do with you? You think I'm even thinking about you and your romantic problems? I'm trying to help a patient very near and dear to my heart and if consulting with your wife, your ex, your mistress whatever it is that she becomes, if that's the thing I have to do to save my patient then I'm damn well gonna do it." Derek says he understands and probably deserves that. Bailey says that Derek has put himself between two fine women and he's just looking for an easy way out. She pushes in the stop button and does not allow Derek to say anything.

Burke, Izzie, and Nurse Tyler are all inside her room. Burke tells Kalpana she had them all worried. He asks Izzie how her work up is going. Izzie says that everything is fine for now. Izzie mentions the contraceptives she is taking. Burke says, "So?" Kalpana agrees and didn't understand why the "other doctor" made a big deal about it. Burke asks, "What other doctor?" Izzie tells him that Cristina was wandering the halls. Burke smiles and tells Izzie to take Kalpana for an ECHO. Kalpana asks a lot of questions about why she needs a test, that she should just receive things like a pacemaker. Burke says they still need to run the tests. Izzie asks if her doctorate was in neuro pharmacology and not medicine. Kalpana says it was in neuro pharmacology. Izzie nods then leaves.

Cristina is looking through charts and Meredith is sitting next to her. Meredith brings up the divorce papers, that it's good, "I mean she's still here being Addison but it's not like I'm jealous or anything." Cristina says, "That's odd." Meredith thinks she's talking about her. Cristina tells her she has every right to be jealous, that it's Meredith's territory and Addison is peeing all over it. Cristina says the thing that is odd is Burke's patient, Kalpana, who was in four other hospitals over the past year. Meredith says she seems very interested in Burke's patient. Cristina says it has nothing to do with him. Meredith says, "Cristina, you lost a fallopian tube, a baby, and a boyfriend all in one day. You have the right to be upset." Cristina says, "And you're losing McDreamy to his perfect wife. You have the right to be jealous." Meredith says she did not lose him and reminds Cristina of the divorce papers, that she's not jealous. Cristina says she's not upset. Meredith then says she should be in her room. Cristina says, "If the situation was reversed, would you really want to spend time with your mother in a confined room with one window?" Then Meredith asks if Cristina thinks they're like their mothers. Cristina just looks at her.

Meredith is standing with her arms folded looking at her mother's empty hospital bed. Nurse Tyler comes in and asks where her mom is. Meredith says, "Exactly. Where is my mother?" George comes into the room and asks where Meredith's mother is. Meredith says, "Funny you should ask." George says, "Oh crap", and leaves the room in search of Ellis.

The radiology tech and Alex are looking at Samuel's results on the monitor. It appears that the bullet went straight through the middle of his head and stopped in the back of his skull. Ellis Grey comes in wearing navy blue scrubs and says, "Are you people just going to sit here or get him into surgery?" Alex and the tech look at each other than at Ellis.

Ellis is explaining to Alex the path of the bullet. Alex looks on with interest. The radiology tech shows Derek where Ellis is. He comes in and tells Ellis she did a great diagnosis. George goes to the doorway with a wheelchair. Derek introduces himself as her neuro-consult. George calls her name and tells her she's needed upstairs. She sits in the wheelchair. George goes to the monitors and says the path of the bullet is unbelievable. Richard is at the door and calls George's name and says, referring to Ellis, "Can you not handle this, doctor?" George goes to Ellis and starts to push her away while muttering under his breath.

Addison, Meredith, and Bailey are with Jeremiah. Addison tells him when they operate she might have to remove his pancreas and re-route his intestine. Jeremiah asks if Bailey told them his lungs do not do well with anesthesia. Bailey says, "Don't I always have your back?" Addison tells him if they don't operate he might have multi-system organ failure. Bailey says it's going to be a long hard surgery and his body will go through a lot of stress. He says, "Yeah, but I'm me." Bailey smiles and says, "But you're you." He asks if he doesn't have the operation he is going to die and if they do operate he has a chance of dying. Addison says yes. Jeremiah says, "Well, I like those odds." Jeremiah remains optimistic, that he has lived with his disease for 26 years; if he gets lucky, great. He holds Bailey's hand. And if he does not get lucky, "It's been sweet." Bailey says, "It's gonna stay sweet."

Derek and Alex are with the Linden couple, Samuel and Farah. Derek says Samuel will have to have a psych consult. Farah reiterates that Samuel was not trying to kill himself, that it was an accident. Samuel holds her hand and tells her they're just trying to do their job. She says their job is to make him better. Derek asks Farah where she was when the gun went off. She says she was in the next room. Samuel says, "It's over now." Alex asks why 911 wasn't called. Farah says it was because he was only unconscious for a moment and then walking and talking again. Derek tells them they'll have to give a report to the police, the law for all G.S.W.'s.

Cristina is lying on a bed researching. George comes and says that she is officially AWOL (absent without official leave). Cristina says she's working trying to "figure out what's wrong with the crazy woman on 4". George says that Cristina is the crazy woman on 4. Cristina says she made a break for freedom. George says Cristina has a better patient than him and she doesn't even have a patient. He doesn't think he should be a nanny, he is a surgeon. He says, "But no I'm getting fake labs for fake patients so she could do a fake surgery." Cristina comes to a realization and says, "She's faking it." George says, "It's real to her. It's Alzheimer's." Cristina quickly gets off the bed and says it's the missionary, Kalpana. She hits George on the back of the head and thanks him. George says, "OW! Uncalled for."

Izzie is looking through all of the charts. Cristina comes with Kalpana's chart and Izzie says she was looking for it everywhere. Cristina asks about Kalpana's test results. Cristina says she can find out what's wrong with her without sticking electrodes in her heart. Izzie says, "Really? Just the chart?" Cristina sits down and says, "No. From the pills she took." Izzie says they're just contraceptives then asks why she is so obsessed with this case and tells her to go back to bed. Cristina says she thinks Kalpana's doing it to herself. Izzie said she would be crazy to be doing it on purpose. Cristina thinks that she has Munchausen's - a mental illness where a person acts as if he or she has a disorder when they, themselves cause the symptoms. Izzie asks, "Seriously?" Cristina tells her to run it by Burke and ask what he thinks. Burke is right behind Cristina so Izzie tells her to tell him herself. Izzie hands Burke Kalpana's chart and leaves. Burke looks at Cristina and she holds her hand up to her forehead. Derek is seated at the Nurse's station. Alex tells him they're all set for O.R. (Operating Room) 2 in 30 minutes. In the background, Farah and Samuel are having an argument. Farah says, "I did everything I was supposed to do. Do you understand that? Twenty one years!" Samuel says, "How many times do I have to say 'I'm sorry'?" Derek asks Alex what the argument's all about. Alex does not know. Samuel says, "I love you. I forgive you." Farah replies, "You cheated on me! And you do not get to play the martyr here." Samuel says, "I've got a bullet in my head." Farah says, "And that doesn't make us even!" Samuel says, "You shot me!" Derek says they'll need to get the police. Alex nods.

Burke is looking over Kalpana's chart. Cristina's trying to explain her theory - Kalpana is in and out of hospitals and that they're like family to her because her real family blows her off to care for other people. Burke says it's not enough, they have to rule out everything physical. Cristina says she lied about having a PhD too, she's only a pharmacy tech. Burke bitterly says, "I've been lied to before." Cristina says, "Hey, we're not talking about us here." Burke says maybe they should be. Cristina doesn't think she was lying. Burke says she withheld the truth. Cristina says, "I distinctly remember you breaking things off with me and you didn't seem so upset about it. This, this is not a relationship. This is not real." Burke leans further back into the chair he is seated on and says her name. Cristina adds, "So what's with the big display of hurt and drama?" Burke says her name again as she opens the door. She says, "I'm supposed to be in bed." He says her name again right before she closes the door.

Samuel is rolled away to be taken to surgery. Derek looks at Meredith who is at the nurse's station. The police come to Derek and Farah. One of the officers talks to Derek while the other two begin to question Farah. Addison comes from behind Meredith and says, "Nothing like a domestic dispute to liven up a pre-op, huh?" Meredith only looks at her and they walk to Jeremiah's bed where Bailey is explaining a form to him, he signs in the D.N.R. area. He has trouble sitting up for Bailey to examine him. He says, "You should probably call my parents." Bailey says, "Call them yourself when you walk out of here." Jeremiah and Bailey smile at each other.

George walks into Ellis' room to see that she isn't there again. Nurse Tyler comes in and says, "Oh no you didn't. You lost her again? Again?" George says, "I am a surgeon, a surgeon." Nurse Tyler says he won't be when Richard finds out he lost Ellis again. Nurse Tyler laughs and leaves.

Izzie and Burke are with Kalpana putting electrodes on her heart to see what is wrong with her. One of the scrub nurses tells them that Kalpana has blue urine. Izzie asks, "Why is her urine blue?" Burke sighs.

George and Richard are walking together. Richard is upset George lost Ellis again. Ellis said she had a surgery scheduled with Shepherd. George says he turned his back for just a moment, Richard says he shouldn't have turned his back at all. Richard sighs and in a quiet voice tells George to "get out of here. You wanna find a hot surgery? Find one. You're free." He says he'll take care of Ellis. George looks guilty.

Derek and Alex are operating on Samuel. Alex calls Samuel 'one sick bastard' with no spine. He doesn't think Samuel should have covered for Farah after shooting him. Derek says, "Well, he did cheat on her." Alex says, "Yeah, and that guilt's worth a bullet in the head?" Derek says that relationships are built on sacrifice and sometimes a bullet is worth it.

Ellis is at the sinks when Richard walks in. She says, "Richard, I thought you'd never get here. Look, the O.R.'s empty. I have a little time before my surgery." She holds Richard's face and kisses him for several seconds. He gently pulls her away. She says, "I don't think I'm supposed to be here." Richard says, "No, you're not." He puts his hand to her cheek. She holds his hand. He takes Ellis back to her room.

Addison, Bailey, and Meredith are operating on Jeremiah. His body seems to be shutting down. His heart rhythm is becoming erratic. Bailey starts CPR. Addison reminds her they are not to take extraordinary measures. Bailey says she's only doing good medicine and starts to do chest compressions.

Burke and Izzie explain to Kalpana that her urine was blue and that a second drug test was positive for amitryptylline, which causes ventricular arrythmias. Kalpana tries to say she didn't do it to herself, that she is sick and there is something wrong with her. Burke tells her she is deceiving herself, they wasted their time and resources to help her, and that she is throwing away her own life. He tells her they are going to transfer her to psych.

Bailey is continuing her compressions on Jeremiah. Meredith offers to take over because Bailey appears to be getting tired. Meredith begins compressions with no improvement to Jeremiah. Bailey pushes Meredith out of the way and begins compressions again. Everyone stops moving. Bailey keeps going and asks why everyone has stopped. Several seconds pass and Jeremiah flat lines. Bailey stops moving, calls his time of death, and leaves the O.R.

Bailey is washing her hands and watches as they wrap Jeremiah's body and wheel him out. Addison comes in followed by Meredith. Addison tries to hand Bailey a paper towel, Bailey gets her own then leaves. Meredith washes her hands. Addison says, "It's hard to accept the end when you're too close." Addison puts on her wedding and engagement rings. She continues, "Look, I don't want someone who doesn't want me, Meredith. But if there's the slightest chance that he does I'm not leaving Seattle." Addison leaves the room.

Derek and Alex stand over Samuel's bed. Samuel asks what Farah said to the police. Derek says, "That you cheated on her, that she was drunk, you were cleaning your guns in the kitchen." Samuel says he is not going to press charges. Alex says it doesn't matter because she confessed to assault in the first degree. Samuel asks if they arrested her. Alex says he should be grateful. Samuel says that he's stupid, nothing could make you feel more stupid than cheating on the woman you love. Derek appears to be very deep in thought. Several feet away Izzie is returning a chart at the nurse's station. Alex looks at her and she smiles at him.

Cristina is pacing by her bed and her mother is seated near the window. Helen says, "Your latte is by your bed and I'm pretty sure it's cold." Cristina says she doesn't need it. Helen tells her she should be in bed. Cristina insists that she is fine. Helen utters, "I don't know why I came." Cristina exclaims, "Then why did you!?" She says she does not need her mother there to take care of her. Izzie comes into the room to tell Cristina she was right and that Kalpana suffers from Munchausen's. Cristina says to her mother, "See, I was right", then to Izzie, "I was right". She repeats it again in a whisper. She says it again and starts to cry uncontrollably while saying "I'm right" over and over.

Alex and Richard are together. Richard tells him he got a call from USMLE saying that Alex did not pass the clinical skills section of his exam. They only just finished the results since he took his test later than the other interns. Alex looks disappointed. Richard tells him he is still an M.D. and still gets to practice medicine. He has four months to retake the exam. Richard tells him to study, pass, and put it behind him. Alex asks what happens if he doesn't pass the second time time around. Richard says failing again is not an option because he would no longer be a surgical intern at SGH.

Derek is seated at a table with his hand to his forehead. He is looking at the divorce papers and holding a pen. He has a difficult time deciding whether to sign or not.

Cristina is still sobbing. Her face is covered with tears. Meredith comes into the room and asks what's happening. Cristina tries to say she can't stop crying but cannot get the words out. Izzie says the sentence for her. George and Helen are also in the room perplexed. Meredith asks what they did to make Cristina like this. Izzie says, "Nothing." George says Cristina is going to get dehydrated and asks if she wants water. Cristina shakes her head no as Meredith tries to approach the bed. George and Izzie both grab her and say that it only makes the crying worse. Helen says, "I knew she'd break sooner or later, just a matter of time." Cristina shouts, "I will kill her!" and points to her mother. Meredith moves Helen out of the room and tells her to come back later. Cristina tells Meredith to make it stop. George tries handing her a tissue and she pushes his hand away. Cristina yells, "Somebody sedate me!!"

Quotes[]

Derek: Addison kissed me. Meredith kissed me. My girlfriend and my wife kissed me on the same day.
Bailey: McDreamy, go sit by someone who cares.

Cristina: Well, can you go get me a mocha latte?
Mrs. Rubenstein: A non-fat one.
Cristina: No, a fat one.

Derek: Addison's leaving. She doesn't have any more patients in this hospital. There's no reason for her to be here.
Meredith: No reason?
Derek: None whatsoever.
Addison: Well now, isn't this cozy? Can I join in or are you not into threesomes?

Derek: You really are Satan. You realize that, right? If Satan were to take physical form, he'd be you. Everywhere, all the time.
Addison: I am so not Satan.
Derek: How come you haven't got on your broomstick and gone back to New York, where you belong?

Addison: Derek, have you ever thought that, even if I am Satan and an adulterous bitch, that I still might be the love of your life?

Cristina: Somebody sedate me!

Samuel: Nothing will make you feel more stupid than cheating on the woman you love. You don't know what you're missing.

Addison: It's hard to accept the end when you're too close. Look, I don't want someone who doesn't want me, Meredith. But if there's the slightest chance that he does, I'm not leaving Seattle.
