In life we are taught that there are seven deadly sins. We all know the big ones... gluttony, pride, lust. But the sin you don't hear much about is anger. Maybe it's because we think anger is not that dangerous, that you can control it. My point is, maybe we don't give anger enough credit. Maybe it can be a lot more dangerous than we think. After all, when it comes to destructive behavior, it did make the top seven. So what makes anger different from the six other deadly sins? It's pretty simple really, you give into a sin like envy or pride and you only hurt yourself. Try lust or coveting and you'll only hurt yourself and probably one or two others. But anger, anger is the worst... the mother of all sins... Not only can anger drive you over the edge, when it does you can take an awful lot of other people with you.

17 Seconds is the twenty-fifth episode of the second season and the 34th overall episode of Grey's Anatomy.

Short Summary[]

Derek ignores Meredith, Addison gets suspicious, Meredith worries about Doc, everyone gets busy treating gunshot wounds, Burke fights to get Denny a new heart and Izzie goes to drastic measures to make sure he gets it.

Full Summary[]

Derek and Burke are drinking and playing darts at the bar. Meredith, Cristina, and Izzie are sitting at the bar, observing them. Cristina thinks Burke is picturing her face. It's Derek's turn. He looks at Meredith angrily before throwing the darts. Izzie tells Meredith he's picturing her. Meredith says he called her a whore. He lost the right to picture her. Cristina thinks Burke has no right to be mad at her for falling asleep during sex. Alex comes over and comments on Izzie finally leaving the hospital and Denny. Izzie says they don't socialize with gynecologists. George sits down and Izzie greets him enthusiastically. Callie's welcome is all but enthusiastic. George orders drinks.

Finn just told Meredith, Addison, and Derek that he thinks Doc has bone cancer. Derek is rather agressive towards him. They might have to amputate Doc's limb. Derek wonders if that's worth it. He doesn't want Doc to suffer.

Addison's on the elevator with Meredith and Derek. She noticed the tension between them and wonders what's going on. They deny something happened between them, so they're all still friends.

Cristina's heard that Burke's going to pick up a heart at Mercy West. She'd like to come with, but he says he won't need help on this one.

The ER is so busy that patients are lying in the hallway. Izzie tells her others that an employee went postal and shot up a restaurant. George heard the shooter got away.

Bailey and Cristina go to take care of a couple. Deborah is really mad, because Neal ducked behind her when the shooting started. Neal says he couldn't help it. He really loves her. He says the bullet went through her and into him, which he thinks is a sign they should be together forever. Deborah disagrees. The fact that she can see Neal through her arm is a sign. Bailey wishes Cristina good luck and leaves.

Callie and Meredith are looking at Will's leg. His tibia probably got hit. Callie tells Meredith to rule out other injuries and take him up to radiology. Meredith witnesses how Derek and George take Kendra Thomas out of the trauma room. They're gonna call her parents.

Izzie's removing shards of glass from Brad's arm. He complains about the pain. She says he was lucky, because gunshot wounds hurt even more. He says there was no luck involved, only quick thinking. As soon as he saw Petey, the shooter, he knew it wasn't good. He fired Petey, so he knew it was coming. Other employees are wheeled past him and he tells them they gotta think quicker on their feet. Izzie says they have life threatening gunshot wounds, but Brad doesn't seem to hear it. He says it helps that he's an athlete, because he dove right through the window when he saw Petey. Too bad the others weren't as quick and smart as him. Izzie guesses the shooter was looking for Brad.

Alex is looking for enema kits because he's trapped upstairs with the uterus parade. He says Addison's truly ruining vaginas for him.

Richard tells Burke that there could be more victims on the way. Burke offers to stay and send Bailey for the heart instead, but Richard tells Burke he should go because he's the only cardiac transplant specialist. Alex follows Burke, not listening to Cristina, who says it's not gonna happen.

As Burke boards the helicopter, Cristina and Alex arrive on the helipad. Alex asks Burke if he can go with him. Cristina says she asked first. She wouldn't be assigned to GWS cases if he had allowed her to come when she asked. Burke takes a moment and picks Karev to come. Alex happily boards the helicopter as Cristina stands there disappointed. Alex asks who the patient is. Burke says it's Denny. Cristina watches the helicopter take off.

Izzie approaches Bailey, who already knows that Izzie wants to prep Denny for his surgery. Bailey says no, because Izzie is too emotionally attached. Izzie says she knows the case inside and out. She promises to be 100% professional. Bailey allows her to go tell him about the heart, but one sign of her crossing the line and she's out.

George joins Derek in the CT boot while Kendra's in the scanner. The bullet went right through the midline. George tells him that Kendra's pregnant.

Back in the ER, Brad keeps talking about how his management insurance covers him 100%. Will's tired of hearing him talk, and so is Meredith. He asks Meredith to find out about Kendra for her. She's great and always nice to everyone, including busboys like him. Also, she's the only one who calls Brad on his crap. Will wishes he could say something, but he really needs the job because he's saving to go back to school. A grumpy Callie comes over and tells Meredith to stop socializing, because Will needs to go to surgery and there are other patients.

Izzie walks into Denny's room and delivers the good news. He asks her to repeat that slowly, because he's gonna want to remember it. She does so. He guesses he's gonna have to take her on some real dates, then. Patricia walks into the room with the DNR he requested. He admits that if he doesn't get this heart, he's done. He's tired. She says she won't let him make this decision. Denny says he believes in heaven, and if he had to choose between this life and one in heaven, he chooses heaven. She says okay and he signs the papers.

Cristina is with Deborah and Neal. They're going to make X-rays to find out the location of the bullet or see what the damage is. Neal wants them to operate on Deborah first. Deborah says they are not engaged anymore. Neal says the wedding is in six weeks. He tells her he loves her. Cristina tells Deborah not to fall for it. Guys suck you in with their "I love you"s and "move in with me"s and they melt your resolve. The minute you need something, they're gonna pass you over or duck behind you. Deborah notes she's very bitter. Neal was thinking the same thing, but Deborah tells him to shut up.

At Mercy West, Burke's informed that there are two donors, brothers, who were in a car accident together. Burke explains to Alex that UNOS has already assigned them their donor. Alex asks who's retrieving the other heart. "Took you long enough, Preston," another surgeon says. She wonders if Alex is there to help Burke carry his ego. Burke tells Alex that Dr. Hahn graduated second in their class at Johns Hopkins. He graduated first.

While Derek is scrubbing in, Addison tells him that Kendra's fetus is 12 weeks along and seemingly healthy. He doesn't reply. She wonders what's going on between him and Meredith, but he denies that there's something to tell. George comes in and says that Kendra's parents have arrived. Derek tells him to have them sign consent forms. Addison looks after Derek as he enters the OR with tears in her eyes.

Burke and Alex find that their donor went into V-fib. They try compressions and shocking him, but it's too late. The muscle is dead, so they can't use it. Burke rushes out and rushes into Erica's OR. He orders her not to move her scalpel.

Erica tells Burke he's not getting her donor heart just because his died. Burke asks if her patient is higher on the transplant list. He sends Alex to find that out. Erica says this is pathetic.

Meredith finds Callie and tells her all of her patients are done. She asks if she can scrub in, but Callie says the board is backed up. Ortho always gets shoved to the back because all other specialties think they are more important. Meredith asks her a question about bone cancer in a dog. She wants to know the success rate of curing an osteosarcoma in a canine leg. Callie reminds her that they have a human patient who might lose his leg and Meredith's asking her about the dog she shares with McDreamy? Callie finds that unbelievable.

Erica says Burke's guy on an LVAD so he's still up and walking, while her guy still needs his dobutamine drip. They're on the phone with UNOS. They're informed that Hahn's patient is .22 points higher. Burke says that's basically a tie. Hahn's patient was admitted before Denny. Burke asks how long. Denny was admitted 17 seconds later. Hahn says it doesn't matter. Burke's phone rings. He hands it to Alex.

It's Izzie calling in to check in. Alex tells her about the situation. Izzie blurts out that Denny's getting worse by the second, claiming that his sats are in the seventies and dropping. Alex says he won't lie for her. She tells him to put Burke on the phone.

Addison asks Meredith if she's seen Alex. Meredith replies she did hours ago. Addison says she needs to ask Meredith something. She's not sure she wants the answer, but she needs to ask. She asks if Meredith is sleeping with her husband. Meredith says not since before she knew he was married. Addison is relieved, but it still felt like there was something going on between them earlier today. Meredith says it's nothing. She says she's dating Finn now. Addison leaves the room.

Burke asks Izzie if it's flash pulmonary oedema. He asks if the LVAD's working. She says yes. She claims his blood pressure is 82 over 40 and still dropping. Burke tells her to put Denny on dopamine. He tells her not to hang up, meaning she's stuck in the lobby.

Burke tells the other that according to his intern, Denny qualifies as a 1A candidate for that heart. That puts him ahead of Hahn's patient. Hahn says that's crap, but the guy from UNOS says they'll allow Burke to run tests to ascertain the status of his patient. Erica says that'll take an hour, but since the donor is stable, Burke has an hour to get the tests. He tells Izzie to get going. Izzie hangs up with a worried look on her face.

In Derek's OR, Kendra's brain is herniating out of the wound and she's bradycardic. Her pulse is down to 32. Derek says the clot's already evacuated. She is brain dead. There's nothing they can do now.

Derek just delivered the news to Kendra's parents. They ask about the baby. They want to keep Kendra alive on life support for the baby. George advises against that, but they tell him he doesn't get a say.

Brad's boasting about how he doesn't feel any of the cuts. He swears he has the highest pain treshold. Will tells Bailey he'd love to say something to the guy, but then he'd get fired. Bailey says he can't fire her. She walks up to Brad and tells him that she's glad he's not in a lot of pain from his very minor injuries, but that there are a lot of people in here who are in a lot of pain. They all got shot with bullets from a gun that was aiming for him. And even though they can't say it because he's the boss of them, those people would really like for him to shut the heck up. As she walks off, Will silently thanks her.

Meredith and Cristina are talking about their boy troubles. Cristina thinks it's controlling and petulant that Burke withholds surgery when she's a bad girlfriend, while Meredith can't believe Derek just wants to put Doc down. Izzie comes over as Cristina decides she's dumping Burke. Izzie says she lied to Burke. She can't think straight. She wonders what to do. She says Denny need to get this heart. Cristina says that won't happen as long as Denny's doing well and someone's ahead on the list. Izzie says that's right. She walks off with a crash cart.

Izzie arrives in Denny's room with the crash cart. She says there may not be a heart as someone else might be getting it instead. She says it doesn't necessarily mean that it won't happen. She has been over this and it can't be fake. They need UNOS to believe them, so it has to be real with charts and labs and everything. In order for him to get the heart, he's gonna have to get much worse very quickly. Denny doesn't see that happening. She says she's going to make it happen.

At Mercy West, Burke asks Alex if Izzie's answering her pages. It's been 30 minutes. Alex guesses she's busy with getting the test results. Bailey is not answering either. Erica tells Burke he can check the chart all he wants, the heart's not going to be his.

As Izzie's closing the blinds, Denny says they are not doing this. Izzie says she'll be there to make sure he doesn't die. He's waited a year and a half for a heart, so he deserves this. Denny says he'll take his chances waiting for the next one. Izzie tells Denny he has to do this. Denny refuses to steal a heart from another man's chest, and it'll end Izzie's career. She says she doesn't care about that. She reveals that there were only 17 seconds between the other guy and Denny entering the list. That's not even the length of a decent kiss. She's not saying this other guy doesn't deserve the heart, but so does Denny. She swears she'll kill Denny herself if he gives her any more crap about walking into the light. Denny says he'll be allright. She doesn't have to worry about him. She asks what about her when he goes into the light. She gets that he'll be okay. She starts sobbing and says she wants him to do this for her. She cannot handle him dying. She won't ever forgive him for making her love him if he does. She begs him do this. He hugs her and says okay.

Callie tells George that Meredith wanted a medical opinion about her dog. George says she likes the dog. Callie doesn't get how he can defend her. George says they all started out together as interns. Callie reminds how badly Meredith hurt him. George says they're all family. He can hate Meredith all he wants, but he'll alwas defends her. He tells her to forgive Meredith for hurting him if she wants to be a part of the family.

Izzie's on the phone with Burke. He asks if she has the lab results. She says she's working on it. She tells him to get back with the heart as soon as he can. He asks what she did. She tells him she'll fax him the labs as soon as she gets them, but he shouldn't waste any time coming back, because she doesn't know enough to know how long Denny has as soon as she gets started. He asks her what she did. She reminds him to hurry and hangs up. Burke goes back into the OR and tells the others that his intern told him that Denny has pulmonary oedema. However, out of respect for Hahn and this unusual situation, he'd like to confirm those results in person. Hahn thinks he must be kidding, because that means another an hour. She wonders why he doesn't call the Chief and have him confirm it. Burke doesn't know what to say. Alex says that because of the shootings, all the attendings are in surgery. Burke says he can either call UNOS and have them give him the heart, or he can go check that it really belongs to him. Erica tells him to go. Burke quietly tells Alex to stay here and guard the heart.

Derek finds Addison and asks her to talk to Kendra's parents, because they won't listen to him. She says okay.

Addison meets with Mr. and Mrs. Thomas to talk to them about their daughter. Kendra's father says they've made up ther minds. Kendra is having the baby. Addison says that is a very bad idea from the medical perspective. Kendra's father says they'd ask for her opinion if they wanted it. Kendra's mother asks her to understand. Addison understands that they think that loving Kendra or her baby enough will keep her close to them, but there's a great risk that if Kendra gets an infection, it'll be passed along to the baby, causing brain damage. The parents want to take their chances. Addison says Kendra's brain dead, meaning her body can't regulate all the things that are important for the fetus. They could try to regulate it, but... Kendra's father loudly asks what the problem is then. Addison says the problem is that they want to use their daughter's corpse as an incubator. Derek takes Addison out of the room.

Derek tells Addison to show some sensitivity. They just lost their daughter and they don't want to let her go. Addison says that is not about love. It is like Derek pretending to love her, while all he does is using her to fill some need he has to be a good guy. Derek says this is not the time to talk about that. He walks away, but she follows him. She yells, wondering if walking away or getting ignored is all she gets from him. She wants him to care. She slept with his best friend and he walked away. He comes out here and rubs it in Derek's face, and still he gets a good night's sleep. She yells that maybe she should go out on a date with the vet, because that seems something that sends Derek into a blind rage. But that won't work either, because she's not Meredith Grey. They then realize they're standing in the lobby and everyone there, including Meredith and Richard, heard their fight.

George is in Kendra's room. He asks them if they have decided about the baby. Kendra's father says they haven't decided about anything. George says he has a couple of families, so he knows a lot about family. You don't necessarily like what they do, but you stick by them. Right now, one of George's friend's boyfriend is dying. He saw that Kendra's a donor, meaning she could save a dozen other lives. From what he's heard about Kendra, he'd think that Kendra would save those people if she had the chance. George suggests they stick by her one last time.

Callie paged Meredith to an X-ray viewing room to look at scans of a human with a tibial osteosarcoma. It's the closest she could find to what's happening to Meredith's dog. The patient died because the cancer was agressive. Meredith thanks Callie, who tells her she's welcome.

Cristina enters the ER and finds that Deborah and Neal have made up. She's decided to give him one more chance. What they went through today has changed him. This bullet will remind him to always do what's right by his Deborah. Deborah suggests that Cristina also forgive her boyfriend, because it feels so much better than all the anger.

While Brad's filling out discharge papers, Bailey assures Will they haven't forgotten about him. They're getting him to an OR as soon as possible. Will asks about his friend Kendra. Bailey says she's sorry. Brad comes over, having overheard the conversation, and assures Will he'll get some time off. He'll talk to the owner and make sure that they'll keep his job for him. It's not his fault he got shot. He can't help but add it wasn't his fault either, since Petey pulled the trigger. Brad says he does the best he can.

Richard meets with Addison, who already knows what he's going to say. She brings up the day she's had, but Richard says they all have those days, but they don't make a scene in front of their peers. Addison has got to get it together. Addison says she can't compete. Derek is not having an affair, he's just in love with Meredith. The only people who don't know that Derek loves Meredith are Derek and Meredith. Richard takes her hand.

Meredith and Derek are riding an elevator. They look at each other. Derek wants to say something, but he can't find the words.

Callie is with George in the intern locker room. She tells him she loves him. She realizes it was too soon and says she's a moron with verbal diarrheae. He just looks at her. She asks him what he's thinking and if he's freaking out. Before he can answer, Izzie bursts in and tells George she needs his help. It's really important. George gets up and tells Callie he'll call her later. He then leaves with Izzie.

Meredith's at Finn's office. She wants to hear the truth about Doc. She thinks he's been downplaying how sick he is. Finn says that the best-case scenario is that Doc has another year left, but Doc is not best-case scenario. Meredith gets emotional. Finn hugs her and says he knows how much she loves him. "I do," she says, seemingly not just talking about Doc.

George and Izzie enter Denny's room. Izzie tells Denny she might have to shock him a few times. Denny asks her to explain this again. Izzie tells him the LVAD is inserted into his abdomen and connected to his heart. The one cord is connected to the power source, the other one is connected to the pump that pumps his heart. Izzie has the crash cart, the debrillator, the Ambu bag, and saline. George asks Izzie what she's going to do. Izzie feels like they should say stuff. Denny asks her to kiss him. She does so. George doesn't mean to be intrusive, but he wants to know what's going. Izzie asks him for a second. She asks Denny if he's ready. He says as ready as he'll ever be. Izzie takes a pair of scissors.

While Deborah and Neal are dealing with discharge papers and Bailey's washing her hands, Brad leaves the ER. Seconds later, the ER staff hears gunshots and screaming outside. Neal ducks behind Deborah again. She announces they're done. Bailey rushes outside. "Petey," Will says.

With the scissors in her hand, Izzie tells Denny that if there is some kind of glowy light, he's gonna have to try like hell to stay out of it. George doesn't like the sound of this. Izzie tells him to make sure nobody comes through that door. George again asks what she's doing. She says she's stopping Denny's heart. She places the scissors on the cord.

Bailey arrives in the ambulance bay and finds Brad and Petey on the ground, bleeding. She checks Brad's pulse.

Izzie has to gather herself for a moment.

Bailey notices that Brad is not the only one who got shot. Burke is also lying on the ground. She calls for help as blood spreads on the ground.

Izzie looks into Denny's eyes.

Bailey starts to tear open Burke's shirt to look at the gunshot wound in his shoulder.

Izzie tells Denny it's okay because Burke will be here any minute. She makes the cut and Denny's monitor flatlines.

Quotes[]

Cristina: (about Burke, who is playing darts with Derek) He is picturing my face. He is totally picturing that dart puncturing my skull. Ooh, look at that.
Izzie: (to Meredith) Derek, Derek is picturing you.
Meredith: He called me a whore. He lost the right to picture me.
Cristina: So I fall asleep during sex. So what? Ass!
Meredith: (about Derek) Ass!
Izzie: (Alex walks over) Oh, ass! Hey.
Alex: (to Izzie) Isobel Stevens has finally left the hospital. Does this mean heart patient dude finally kicked it?
Izzie: (to Alex) I'm sorry, this section of the bar is for surgeons. We don't socialize with gynecologists.

Brad Ackles: (to a nurse) Even with all these cuts, I don't feel any pain. I swear, I have the highest pain threshold of anybody I know.
Will: (quietly, to Bailey) My God! If I could say something to that guy and not get fired!
Miranda: He can't fire me. (walks up to Brad) Mr. Ackles, Brad, I'm happy for you that you're not feeling much pain from your very minor injuries, but there are many people in this hospital, who are in a great amount of pain. See, they have bullets in their bones, in their chest and in their brains. Bullets from a gun that was aiming for you. And although they can't say it because you're the boss of them, most of these people, at this moment, are praying. Not that they'll live, not that the pain will subside, they're praying to God, for you, at this moment, to shut the heck up.

Denny: Izzie... I'm gonna be all right. All right. You don't have to worry.
Izzie: What about me? What about me when you go into the light?
Denny: Izzie...
Izzie: No! I get it, okay? I get it! You'll be okay, you'll be fine, but what about me?! Don't do it for yourself, do it for me! Please? Please, Denny! Please do this for me! Because if you die... Oh, God! You have to do this! You have to do this for me, or I'll never be able to forgive you!
Denny: For dying?
Izzie: No! For making me love you! Please? Please, do this.
Denny: Come here.
Izzie: Please do this for me? Okay? Please? I can't do this if you don't... please! Do this for me! Please!!
Denny: Okay, okay, I'll do it.

Denny: A kiss is worth a thousand words.

Izzie: Everyone entered into the transplant program is clocked in to the second... to the second, Denny. You were clocked in to the second and so was the other guy. I checked with UNOS. The difference between when you entered the program and when he entered the program is 17 seconds. That it, Denny, 17 seconds. I mean, that's not even the length of a decent kiss. So, this other guy? I'm not saying that he doesn't deserve this heart. I'm sure he does. But so do you. So do you. And if you tell me anymore crap about heading towards the light or looking down on me from heaven, I swear... I will kill you myself right now.

Addison: I know what you're going to say Richard, but if you knew the day I've had-
Richard: Everybody in this hospital has those days, Addison, and no one makes a scene in front of their peers. Get it together. Addison?
Addison: I can't compete. He's not having an affair. He's not trying to hurt me. He's just... the only people who don't know that Derek loves Meredith are Derek and Meredith. How do I compete with that?

Derek: What do you want from me, Addison?
Addison: I want you to care. I sleep with your best friend, and you walk away. Then he comes out here from New York and rubs it in your face, and you still get a good night's sleep. What do I have to do? Oh, I know. Maybe what I should do is go out on a date with the vet, because that seems to be something that sends you into a blinding rage. Oh, but wait. That won't work either because I'm not Meredith Grey!
